August 2009 … Ride Hard

Motorcycles and the Economy

Posted by admin On December - 3 - 2009

We have been hearing a lot lately about people who are looking to start riding in order to help ease their budgets by reducing their monthly gas bill.  Along with this we are being asked some of the same questions over and over again so thought we would offer our thoughts on this subject.

Can you reduce your monthly gas bill by riding a motorcycle?  Well if you drive an Hummer as your primary mode of transportation and switch to a motorcycle then yes you can save a fair amount of money each month.  If on the other hand you drive a car that gets really good gas mileage and move to a high end sport bike then you may not see much difference.  Motorcycles are like cars, it all depends on what you ride, and how you ride it.

With that being said, we think that a motorcycle can help save the normal person some money in gas each month, but we do not recommend that being your deciding factor.  There are many other things to take into account.  In Florida you have to take an endorsement course in order to receive your motorcycle endorsement on your drivers license.  These class run between $225.00 - $350.00 depending on where you take them.  In some cases if you are purchasing a new motorcycle the place you buy it will offer you a free class or a discounted price on the class.

Also you will need to look at purchasing some safety gear for riding your new motorcycle.  We always recommend that you take a hard look at the helmet you decide to use (and we highly recommend that you do wear one).  This may be one of the most important life saving items you purchase, so make sure you get a good one.  Also take into account that you will be wearing the helmet for long periods of time, so it needs to fit you properly and have good air flow.

If you are looking to make the move to a motorcycle, be sure to consider what your needs and desires are before buying one.  If you like sports cars, then you may want to consider a sport bike.  Just like sports cares the sports bike is limited on storage space.  In fact it is even more limited than many think, and often times riders end up wearing backpacks to carry things around.  While this is doable it does wear on you and can leave you soar and tired at the end of the ride.  A cruiser with saddlebags (and maybe a trunk) offers you more storage and can make your trip more enjoyable.  So when selecting your new ride, be sure to consider what you really want to accomplish.

We hope that helps answer some of the questions we often hear from people considering making the move to a motorcycle as their primary mode of transportation.  Also remember to keep the weather in mind.  It is not much fun riding in the rain.

If you want more information and help with deciding on what type of motorcycle would be best for you, we recommend you talk with a professional.  Some of the places we highly recommend are:

  • Motorcycle Clinic in Kissimmee
  • Boston Mikes in Sanford
  • Seminole Harley in Sanford
  • Cuzzo Customs in Deltona
  • DelandMotor Sprots in Deland
